Companion Card & Carer Card: what’s the difference?

If you’ve ever felt confused about the difference between the Companion Card and the Carer Card, then read on to find out what each card is for, who can get one, and their benefits.

Firstly, let’s look at the Companion Card.

It’s issued in the name of the child with disability because they require one-on-one assistance to get out and about due to their disability or condition.

To be eligible for a Companion Card, your child must have a significant and permanent disability. You must show evidence that they need support to attend events and activities, and that they’re a permanent resident or an Australian citizen.

Companion Card benefits

There are lots of benefits to the Companion Card. Parents and support workers accompanying a child with the card can go to events and activities free of charge. These include public transport, swimming pools, gyms, cinemas, sporting events and other attractions.

The Companion Card can take a while to come, so it’s a good idea to get started with the application in plenty of time for the school holidays.

So what about the Carer Card?

The Carer Card which is also known as the ‘we care’ card, is issued in the name of the parent of the child with disability. Foster, kinship, and permanent carers are also eligible to apply.

Unlike the Companion Card, you can use the Carer Card without your child being with you for discounts on shopping and services, and on public transport.

You can get a Carer Card if you receive the Carer Payment or the Carer Allowance. And even if you don’t get these payments, your GP can fill in the form and confirm that you’re a carer and that you’re eligible.

Carer Card discounts

Some of the great discounts available with a Carer Card include:

5% off Woolworths gift cards, which can be used for shopping. You need to register for the discount.
20% off at all Salvos stores if you show your card at the checkout.
Concessions on public transport on weekdays and free travel on weekends, if you use a Carer Coded myki card which is available at staffed train stations.
