Your guide to Victoria’s accessible beaches
24 November 2023
Slip, slop, slap, the weather is getting warmer and we’re looking forward to spending time at the beach this summer.
If you’re planning a trip to the coast but don’t know where to find accessible beaches with the facilities you need, look no further – we’ve got it covered! We’ve done our homework and we’ve found plenty of accessible and inclusive beaches along the beautiful Victorian coastline for you and your family to enjoy.
Lots of local councils have facilities like beach matting, beach wheelchairs for hire, and Changing Places toilets. So we’ve created a snapshot of what’s available:
Melbourne
- Bayside City Council
- City of Kingston
- City of Port Phillip
- Frankston City Council
- Hobson’s Bay City Council
Regional
- Bass Coast Shire Council
- City of Greater Geelong
- Corangamite Shire

Some of our favourites
Altona Beach
Altona Beach is the first beach in Australia to offer year-round beach matting, and in the summer Beach Wheelchair Hire is available through Hobsons Bay City Council. Nearby, at Weaver’s Reserve, you’ll also find an accessible changing room with a host. If sand isn’t you’re thing, you can also enjoy a walk along the sealed Hobson Bay Coastal Trail.
Carrum Beach
At Carrum Beach you will find: Beach wheelchair hire, beach matting, accessible bathrooms and showers, a hoist, paths to the beach and accessible parking. All this on top of the fantastic sea views and white sand. Accessible Beaches Australia gives Carrum Beach a 5 star rating for their amazing accessibility features.
Frankston Beach
Frankston Beach is the latest in Victoria to get wheelchair beach matting! And even better, community members can hire Council’s beach wheelchair for free via the Frankston Visitor Information Centre. At Frankston foreshore you’ll also find a playground with a Liberty Swing, so you can really enjoy some fun in the sun.
